Privacy Policy
Effective September 21, 2026
Detour helps you build road trips and discover unusual places near a route. This policy explains how the app handles information.
Information stored on your device
Your active trip settings, added stops, and progress are kept only for the current app or browser session. They are cleared when the session ends or when you choose “Finish trip & clear.” Trips you explicitly save, along with your Google Maps browser key, remain stored locally on your device until you delete them or clear site data.
Advertiser information
When a business applies to advertise, Detour stores the submitted business name, contact details, public address, category, website, photo link, description, subscription, and review status. Approved public business information may appear as a sponsored stop. Contact details are used for application administration and are not displayed to travelers.
Detour records aggregate sponsored-listing interactions such as impressions, detail views, trip adds, website clicks, direction taps, and route starts. These performance counts are tied to the advertiser, not a traveler account, and Detour does not store the traveler’s origin or destination with them.
Community place submissions
When you suggest a weird place, Detour stores the place details, links, your name and your email so the owner can review and verify the submission. Your contact information is never shown to travelers. Only owner-approved place details can appear in discovery results.
Location
Detour requests location only when you choose a location feature. Location is used to provide that feature and may be sent to Google Maps services to return maps, routes, and nearby-place results.
Google Maps
Map, route, place, photo, and discovery features use Google Maps Platform. Google may receive search terms, route locations, device and network information, and other data described in Google’s Privacy Policy.
Payments
Advertiser purchases open a Stripe-hosted checkout. Stripe processes the payment and related customer information under Stripe’s Privacy Policy. Detour does not receive or store full payment-card numbers. Detour receives subscription and payment-status updates from Stripe so approved listings can be activated, paused, or canceled.
Advertising
Sponsored stops are clearly labeled. Detour uses route context—not cross-app behavioral tracking—to show relevant sponsored locations. Detour does not use Apple’s advertising identifier or sell personal information.
Data choices
You can remove the saved Maps key in Settings. Removing the app or clearing site data removes locally stored trip data. Advertisers and place submitters may request correction or deletion using the contact below.
Children
Detour is not directed to children under 13.
Changes
This policy may be updated as the service changes. The effective date above will change when it is updated.
